How to Apply for Driver’s License and its approval in Indiana BMV?

  • Types: There are two types of Driver’s License – Probationary Driver’s License and Standard Driver’s License. If someone is under the age of 21, their license is considered Probationary. A learner’s permit for 180 days (approximately six months) is a must. If a person successfully completed an approved driver education program and is at least 16 years and 90 days old then the License can be obtained. A Standard License can be obtained only if a person is 21 years of age or older. A US citizen can renew his/her license up to 24 months prior to its expiration.
  • Examination and Screening: All applicants are required to take a vision screening, which checks on the measures of a person’s visual acuity. You need to take a written test for applying for a new Driver’s License, or on renewing from a probationary driver’s license to a standard driver’s license or if you moved recently to Indiana from another country or on the expiration of driver’s license. Some written tests are also required for transferring a CDL, motorcycle or for-hire endorsement.

  • Driving Test: An applicant should arrive at least 15 minutes before the scheduled appointment time to take the driving test. For the test one needs to visit the BMV branch, according to the suitable location.
  • Renewing or Replacing a License online: You can also renew and replace your driver’s license online if your name and address are the same as in the last license, if you do not have endorsement or restriction that prevents online processing (if looking for online renewing), if you are not required to take exams. All you need to provide is your date of birth and Social Security Number in order to renew or replace your driver’s license.
